In honor and recognition of the incredible life saving work those in the field of emergency medical services perform each day, Newberry County Council recently proclaimed May 18-24, 2025, as Emergency Medical Services Week in Newberry County.
The proclamation, which was approved by council on May 7, reads as follows:
“WHEREAS, emergency medical services are a vital public service; and
“WHEREAS, the members of emergency medical services teams are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and
“WHEREAS, access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury; and
“WHEREAS, emergency medical services fill healthcare gaps by providing important, out-of-hospital care, including preventative medicine, follow-up care, and access to telemedicine; and
“WHEREAS, the emergency medical services system consists of first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, emergency medical dispatchers, firefighters, police officers, educators, administrators, pre-hospital nurses, emergency nurses, emergency physicians, trained members of the public, and other out of hospital medical care providers; and
“WHEREAS, the members of emergency medical services teams, whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their lifesaving skills; and
“WHEREAS, it is the desire of Newberry County Council to recognize the accomplishments of Newberry County EMS and the critical public service it provides; and
“WHEREAS, the 2025 observance of Emergency Medical Services Week celebrates its 51st anniversary and is themed “EMS Week: We Care For Everyone.”
“NOW, THEREFORE, Newberry County Council does hereby proclaim the week of May 18, 2025 – May 24, 2025, as Emergency Medical Services Week in Newberry County and encourages all residents of Newberry County to observe the week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities in honor of the EMS profession and the essential services it provides.”

In recognition and thanks to the hardworking and dedicated officers and employees at the Newberry County Detention Center, Newberry County Council proclaimed May 18, 2025,-May 24, 2025, as Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Newberry County.
The Proclamation, approved on May 7, 2025, reads as follows:
“WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week was first proclaimed on May 5, 1984, by President Ronald Reagan when he signed Proclamation 5187 creating “National Correctional Officers’ Week,” to recognize the men and women who work in jails, prisons, and community correction across the country; and
“WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week became the official name when in May 1986, the U.S. Senate officially changed the name from “National Correctional Officers Week”; and
“WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week has been designated as the week of May 4, 2025 – May 10, 2025, by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Prisons; and
“WHEREAS, Corrections Officers are dedicated professionals who chose a career as community servants, who manage a diverse group of individuals, some of whom are violent, mentally ill, and dangerous, and who often go unseen and unappreciated by the general public; and
“WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week raises awareness of the duties, hazards, and sacrifices made by Correctional Employees; and
“WHEREAS, it is the desire of Newberry County Council to thank the correctional officers and employees of the Newberry County Detention Center for their hard work and dedication to providing safe, secure, and humane incarceration of offenders within their custody by observing Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Newberry County.
“NOW, THEREFORE, Newberry County Council does hereby proclaim the week of May 18, 2025 – May 24, 2025, as Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Newberry County and encourages our county community to pay tribute to the Correctional Officers and Employees of the Newberry County Detention Center for the vital public service they provide.”

In honor of the many law enforcement officers who have lost their lives or have become disabled in the performance of their duty, Newberry County Council has proclaimed May 15, 2025, at Peace Officers Memorial Day in Newberry County.
The Proclamation reads as follows:
“WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy, Jr. proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and Congress designated the week of May 15th as National Police Week by Joint Resolution; and
“WHEREAS, the members of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of our community; and
“WHEREAS, there are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office; and
“WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1786, there are currently more than 24,000 law enforcement officers in the United States who have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty; and
“WHEREAS, it is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards and sacrifices of law enforcement officers, and that law enforcement officers recognize their duty to serve the people of this community, by protecting them against violence and disorder; and
“WHEREAS, it is the desire of Newberry County Council to thank Sheriff Lee Foster and the officers and employees of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office for their courage, dedication and personal sacrifice and to recognize the law enforcement officers of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office for the essential public service they provide; and
“NOW, THEREFORE, Newberry County Council does hereby proclaim May 15, 2025, as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in memory of those law enforcement officers, who through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty, and to honor those law enforcement officers presently serving the community.”

Two Newberry County employees were recognized on May 7, 2025, for their dedicated service to Newberry County, both employees having worked for the county for at least two decades.
First up was Timothy “Jason” Hueble, who has served the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office for 20 years. According to County Administrator Jeff Shacker, Jason began his career with the NCSO as a patrol deputy and in 2011 he was assigned to the Civil Process division, where he currently still serves.
Next to be recognized was Jeff Martin, who worked as a facilities technician, not only for 25 years with Newberry County, but also for his retirement. Administrator Shacker said that Mr. Martin arrived he had a great deal of building maintenance knowledge and experience, having graduated from Piedmont Technical College’s HVAC Program and working for the hospital. Mr. Martin plans to spend his retirement taking care of his farm and animals and going fishing and hunting whenever he can.

Public safety telecommunicators are often unseen but put in a tremendous amount of work to help keep residents safe. In recognition of their hard work, Newberry County Council proclaimed May 11,2025-May 17, 2025, as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in Newberry County.
The proclamation read as follows:
“WHEREAS, emergencies that require law enforcement, fire or emergency medical services can occur at any time; and
“WHEREAS, when an emergency occurs the prompt response of law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs is critical to the protection of life and preservation of property; and
“WHEREAS, the safety of our law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs is dependent upon the quality and accuracy of information obtained from citizens who telephone the Newberry County 911 communications center; and
“WHEREAS, the Public Safety Telecommunicators of the Newberry County 911 Communications Center have contributed substantially to the apprehension of criminals, suppression of fires and treatment of patients; and
“WHEREAS, the Public Safety Telecommunicators of Newberry County exhibit compassion, understanding and professionalism during the performance of their duties; and
“WHEREAS, National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week was first proclaimed on April 12, 1994, by President William “Bill” Clinton when he signed Proclamation 6667 creating “National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week” to recognize the men and women who work in the field of public safety telecommunications across the nation; and
“WHEREAS, it is the desire of Newberry County Council to thank the employees of the Newberry County 911 Communications Center for their dedication, hard work and compassionate service to the citizens of Newberry County.
“NOW, THEREFORE, Newberry County Council does hereby proclaim the week of May 11, 2025 – May 17, 2025, as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in Newberry County, in honor of the men and women whose diligence and professionalism keep our county and citizens safe.”
