Newberry County Veteran’s Affairs recently got to work in the community to help construct ramps for local seniors.
The first ramp was constructed for Mr. Thomas Longshore, a 94-year-old combat medic who fought in the Korean War. Chapin Baptist Men’s Ministry, headed by Mr. Woody Wager and Mr. Billy Gardner, worked with about 50 volunteers to construct the ramp. In fact, they said this was one of the largest ramps their ministry has built!
The second ramp was assembled by EmmanuWheel (emmanuwheel.org), headed by Mr. Chris Sharpe, for Ms. Annell Lee Glasgow -- the widow of combat veteran Mr. Perry Lee Glasgow, a Vietnam veteran.
These two organizations are all volunteers and have made it their missions to give back to their communities.
Newberry County Veteran’s Affairs would like to offer their heartfelt gratitude for all of their help to improve the lives of our local veterans and their families!
Today, we celebrate Juneteenth National Independence Day, or simply Juneteenth.
President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, declaring the slaves in Confederate territory free, paving the way for the passing of the 13th Amendment, which formally abolished slavery in the United States of America. However, word about the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation was delayed until to June 19, 1865, in reaching authorities and African Americans in the South and Southwestern United States.
Today’s holiday has been celebrated in the African American community for over 150 years!
During last night’s Newberry County Council meeting, council approved a Proclamation declaring June 19, 2025, as Juneteenth in Newberry County, urging residents to become more aware of the significance of this celebration in African American History in the heritage of our nation and county.
