The Magistrate's Court is the Summary Criminal Court and the Small Claims Court for South Carolina residents. It is established under the SC Unified Judicial System supervised by the Chief Justice of the SC Supreme Court through the Office of Court Administration. The Magistrates' Court is responsible for trying all traffic cases and misdemeanor criminal offenses that carry up to a 30-day jail sentence or $500 fine. Criminal cases that have more severe consequences are referred to the General Sessions Court.
The Magistrates Court also handles small claims disputes up to $7,500 in value and landlord-tenant disputes. Civil cases that exceed small claim maximum value are removed to the Court of Common Pleas.
PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SHOW VALID PROOF OF REGISTRATION, INSURANCE OR DRIVER'S LICENSES, PLEASE EMAIL THESE DOCUMENTS TO THE COURTHOUSE TO josborne@newberrycounty.gov. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBLITY TO MAKE SURE THE APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTS ARE GIVEN TO THE COURT IN REFERENCE TO YOUR TICKET(S) BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED COURT DATE.
IF YOU NEED YOUR COURT DATE RESCHEDULED, YOU NEED TO CONTACT THE COURTHOUSE BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED COURT DATE AND PROVIDE A WRITTEN REASON YOU NEED YOUR CASE(S) RESCHEDULED. YOU CAN EMAIL THEM TO josborne@newberrycounty.gov, OR YOU CAN FAX THEM TO THE COURTHOUSE AT 803-321-2172.
**PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU HAVE A CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR CHANGE IN PHONE NUMBER IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT THE COURT TO HAVE THAT INFORMATION UPDATED!!**
Paying a Traffic Ticket Online:
To pay a traffic ticket online, go to www.sc.gov. Click the link that says, "Paying a Traffic Ticket". You will be directed to a screen that says "Counties that accept online payments" and you will need to choose Newberry County. The next screen will ask you to accept the terms and conditions. Once you accept the terms and conditions, you will be directed to a page that will require your case number (ticket number) and your last name.
**Please be aware that credit card payments are ran once a day. It normally takes one day for your payment to come through to the court.**
