In honor of Independence Day, during the National Anthem at the beginning of the Chapin Newberry and Lexington American Legion baseball game on Wednesday, July 2, an American Flag was unfurled on the field.
American Legion Posts 24 and 219 helped with the unfolding of the flag during the game that took place at Newberry College. Those who were present and assisted included Scouts from Little Mountain Troop 61 and Stoney Hill Troop 316, members of Woodmen Life Chapter 417, and the Veteran’s Affairs Office of Newberry County.
The flag was provided by Patrick Moloney, representative of Woodmen Life.
“The Veteran’s Affairs Office of Newberry County is always ready and willing to assist veterans in any way we can. This was an incredible, patriotic moment that our office was happy to participate in,” said Raleigh Hickman, director of Veteran’s Affairs Office of Newberry County. “We proudly participated with a lot of amazing groups – all of which work to help veterans in our community.”
During the most recent Newberry County Council meeting, Tommy Long, Newberry County Emergency Services director, recognized the Silverstreet Fire Department, as part of a new tradition Newberry County Council has initiated to recognize the volunteer departments!
During his presentation, he highlighted their volunteers, performance, recognitions, history, and much more!
Newberry County Council thanked the volunteers for their hard work and acknowledged how lucky the county is to have the volunteer departments.

Newberry County Veteran’s Affairs recently got to work in the community to help construct ramps for local seniors.
The first ramp was constructed for Mr. Thomas Longshore, a 94-year-old combat medic who fought in the Korean War. Chapin Baptist Men’s Ministry, headed by Mr. Woody Wager and Mr. Billy Gardner, worked with about 50 volunteers to construct the ramp. In fact, they said this was one of the largest ramps their ministry has built!
The second ramp was assembled by EmmanuWheel (emmanuwheel.org), headed by Mr. Chris Sharpe, for Ms. Annell Lee Glasgow -- the widow of combat veteran Mr. Perry Lee Glasgow, a Vietnam veteran.
These two organizations are all volunteers and have made it their missions to give back to their communities.
Newberry County Veteran’s Affairs would like to offer their heartfelt gratitude for all of their help to improve the lives of our local veterans and their families!
