For the third year, Newberry will serve as a location for the Spartan Race event. While the bulk of set-up and events will take place on the Johnson Family Farm, there will be some race routes and obstacles that will bring racers through Lynch’s Woods Park (LWP), as the two properties are adjoined.
Due to damage from Hurricane Helene, the park has been closed for cleanup since September 30, 2024.
“Thanks to amazing crews/staff, partner organizations, and community volunteers much progress has been made,” said Jessie Long, director of Newberry County Parks and Recreation.
The park re-opened to foot and bicycle traffic on the gravel road only on November 9, 2024. All trails will remain closed as work continues. Currently, the park remains closed to equestrian and vehicular traffic with the goal of having some trails re-open prior to December 2024.
Beginning November 11, 2024, the Spartan Race staff will begin setting up obstacles throughout Lynch’s Woods Park. The Spartan Race event takes place November 16 and 17, 2024, and post event cleanup will begin immediately following the event and ending by November 20, 2024.
During these dates, Newberry County Parks and Recreation request that park visitors avoid areas where Spartan obstacles are being constructed or have been constructed.
“The support from the community has been phenomenal as we have worked to coordinate cleanup efforts to get the park open to our community. The timing and extent of the damage from Hurricane Helene has made it extremely difficult to open the park any sooner than it coinciding with the Spartan Race set-up/event. We hope park visitors will come out and enjoy a hike or bicycle ride along the gravel road with the understanding that the cleanup is ongoing, and we are working to get the park back to the condition it was in prior to the storm,” said Long.
